What Is Herpes?
Herpes is an infection. It is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus and starts as a small irritation with small clusters of blisters appearing. These blisters will start to drain and then disappear after a short time but return soon after, continuing this pattern but with symptoms becoming less severe as time goes on. About 50% of all adults carry this virus and about 20 to 25 percent will actually come down with the infection as either genital herpes or oral herpes. According to where the breakout occurs gives it it's name. On the face or mouth it is called Oral Herpes better known as fever blisters or cold sores. This is the commonest form. Genital herpes is second for most common. The Herpes Virus also is the cause of Bell's Palsy, Encephalitis, Neonatal herpes, Molarity's Meningitis and Ocular Herpes.

Signs And Symptoms
Herpes viruses begins as itchy red irritations that turn into blisters that contain the virus. These blisters usually last anywhere from two to twenty one days drying up into a sore and then a scab. The scab will then fall off (shedding) and then disappear only to return again. People with genital herpes may not know they even have it. After the first infection the virus can move into the sensory nerves where they can stay dormant a person's whole life. Some though will continue with outbreaks. Why this happens is unknown. As time goes on these recurrences will become less and less.
Modes Of Transmission
- Direct contact with a blister
- Direct contact with body fluid of someone infected
- Skin to skin even when infected person has no symptoms but is "shedding".
Treatments
There is no cure for herpes but treatment can help reduce the outbreaks and reduce the severity of them. When a person gets infected by herpes it will remain in the body for the life of the person. Some will no longer experience symptoms but still remain contagious.
